Dressing for Holiday Parties in 2015

Parties, parties, parties! ‘Tis the season for holiday occasions, whether they’re family dinners, black-tie affairs, or office celebrations. But what does the FashioNitsa wear for all these events? Unless it’s an ugly sweater party, she does not pull out the Rudolph-and-Frosty-bedecked knitwear. Read on for our favorite looks this holiday season. What are the best looks for the holiday party season?

Look #1: Office Holiday Party

Company parties can be very risky, and not just from a fashion perspective. The trick is to be celebratory but still professional, both in terms of behavior and in terms of dress. Since many holiday parties start right after work, you can find a great solution with Nitsa’s specialty day-into-night outfits and dresses. To transition seamlessly from work into the evening event, bring some bling to amp up your work outfit. Shine, which is always popular at the holidays, is especially strong this year. Try shoes, a bag, or a scarf embellished with glitter to keep your look professional but still fun.

Look #2: Festive Casual

Get-togethers with family and friends are rarely formal affairs, but the holidays call for some sense of occasion and fun. Nitsa’s recommendation: start with a pair of our on-trend jeans, and build the rest of your outfit around this casual base. Jewel tones are often flattering around the face and are especially hot this season. Metallics give a real sense of occasion, as do a pair of glam shoes or a jeweled clutch.

Look #3: Formal or Black Tie

Whether it’s a winter wedding or a glittering New Year’s Eve party, a formal party is the time to pull out all the stops. If you’re feeling daring, you can go full-length and unleash your inner diva, or go for slightly less formality with the perfect cocktail dress. This season, icy pastels are dominating the runways, but if that doesn’t suit your skin tone, you can always go deep with beautiful jewel tones. This time of year, emerald and ruby are especially popular, but not together!

Wearable Technology and Fashion Tech Accessories

Have you ever seen a picture of the first digital watch/calculator combination? It was huge, bulky, and black, and it sat on the wrist like Darth Vader’s favorite ornament. Wearable technology has come a long way since the 1980s—with beautiful jewelry and accessories masking an array of useful tools. During the intervening decades, the miniaturization of computers has enabled a boom in wearable technology; a 2014 Global Web Index report found that fully 71 percent of Millennials (people aged 16 to 24) were interested in wearable technology. From activity trackers to Bluetooth headsets to fully-functioning computers, this trend seems like it’s here to stay.

The ubiquity of smartphones and tablets has driven an increase in attractive accessories for them. It seems that bracelets and earrings may be optional, but smartwatches and earbuds are not. People’s insistence on accessing their technology at all times has naturally led to a desire to look better doing it; Apple’s white earbuds are fine for jogging, for instance, but they don’t exactly make your officewear pop. And who wants a boring phone case when this two-by-four-inch rectangle provides a perfect blank canvas for self-expression?

At Nitsa’s, we proudly offer products from Triple C, a leader in fashionable wearable technology. Triple C was founded in 2005 with a line of stylish accessories, but they saw the growing trend of wearable technology and switched their focus in 2010. Through their own product line and private-label partnerships with such fashion brands as Kate Spade and Coach, Triple C’s tech accessories make a statement. Be a part of the future with Nitsa’s and Triple C!

It’s a Tracksuit… It’s Business Casual… It’s Athleisure!

Once dismissed as a flash-in-the-pan fad, athleisure clothing is now called “the trend that won’t die” by the fashion press. Athleisure—a word that combines athletics and leisure —refers to athletic clothing that can be worn in non-athletic settings. Signs of the athleisure trend have dominated the runways for the past several seasons, from cashmere hoodies to Chanel sneakers, and entire clothing lines are now devoted to this fast-growing market.

One reason for athleisure’s rise in popularity is recent technological gains in the textile industry. Many fabrics can now stretch in some places and drape in others, creating a more sophisticated, polished look. Others conform to the wearer’s curves for a body-conscious style. Many of Nitsa’s newest lines, like those from Lyssé and Herve Leger, use these athletic fabrics to create their signature styles.

Another reason for the continued popularity of athleisure clothes is our national preoccupation with fitness. Increasingly, physical fitness is seen as a whole lifestyle choice, not just a weekend hobby, and people want their clothes to show their commitment to health. With many athleisure choices, a wearer can easily step outside the office for a brisk walk during lunch and then return to her desk without bringing a change of clothes.

Finally, with their focus on function along with form, athleisure clothes tend to be far more comfortable and practical than traditional casual wear. Stretchable material offers more comfort and flexibility, whether people are sitting at a desk or circulating at a party. Come into Nitsa’s to be a part of the athleisure revolution!

How to Tie Your Scarves!

Why Scarves Are a Must-Have in Your Wardrobe!

The leaves are starting to turn, and the mercury is dropping; now is the time to find your how to tie your favorite scarvesperfect scarf!

Scarves this season feature rich colors and bold designs. The infinity scarf is still popular, and can now be found in a variety of styles from athletic to elegant. Long, thin scarves can help to elongate your body and add a touch of style. Large silk squares, à la Hermès, remain classic, while art-print silks offer a modern take on the look. As the weather gets even colder, look for scarves to get larger and cozier: think pashmina-style capes. Some designers are even offering blanket-scarves!

Here are some ways we have seen scarves on the runways this fall:

The L: With a long scarf, wrap one half around your neck and leave it hanging down the back, while the other end hangs down the front.

The Cowgirl: Fold a medium-sized square scarf in half on the diagonal. Let the wide end of the triangle cover your throat, and wrap the two ends around the back of your neck and back to the front. Tie loosely.

The Lovebite: Fold a small square scarf into a tube shape and tie (not too tightly) around your neck with the ends on the side. It’s très Francais!

The Belt: With a long silk scarf, pull it through the belt loops in your jeans and make it a belt. It’s a great way to showcase an art print!

The Classic: To show off a large silk square, fold it in half on the diagonal and arrange it over your shoulders with the widest part of the triangle lying across your back. It’s a beautiful and confident way to show off one of the seasons hottest accessories!

Nitsa’s Grand Reopening – Focus of the Week: Sweaters and Tops

During the second week of Nitsa’s Grand Reopening, we are pleased to offer 25 percent off all sweaters and tops! This season’s tops boast a broad range of styles, colors, and shapes, so there’s something wonderful for everybody. Some of our favorite sweaters and shirts this season come from top designers like cooper & ella, tbagslosangeles, and Aldomartins (Barcelona).

Cooper & ella is the brainchild of a busy working mom who couldn’t find the perfect “date blouse,” so she created one herself. Her ready-to-wear pieces, which are memorable, flattering, and versatile, are now sold in 250 department stores and boutiques worldwide. Cooper and ella is for the woman who is “doing it all” and wants to look good while doing it. From desk to dinner, day to night, lacrosse field to ballet recital, cooper & ella is for today’s modern woman.

Tbagslosangeles is the highly coveted brand worn by many A-list celebrities. Featuring creator Shadi Askari-Farhat’s signature bohemian style, tbagslosangeles showcases vibrant prints on feminine, versatile pieces.

Aldomartins was created by Martí Bisbal in Barcelona in 1975. Since then, the brand has been known for impeccably designed, chic knitwear made from the finest materials. This year’s designs feature bold prints, varied textures, and European flair.

Change is Good…When It Comes to Alterations

French women have a reputation for being relentlessly, terrifyingly chic. Even in jeans and a t-shirt, they often look like they are ready for a trip down the runway. Are French jeans and t-shirts really that much better than their American counterparts, or is something else going on? In fact, there is one secret that French women know, and at Nitsa’s, we know it too; the secret to looking chic is a perfect fit, and the secret to getting a perfect fit is custom tailoring. That’s why we offer on-site alterations at both our stores. As our founder, Nitsa Bambalis, said: “Fashion is one part style and three parts fit.”

When you see photoshoots in magazines or advertisements, the clothes always fit perfectly, right? Wrong—at least not at first. Those clothes have been altered and pinned in place to be as flattering as possible. Even the mannequins in many clothing stores are not immune. If you walk around the back of the mannequin, you’ll likely see that the clothes have been pulled and pinned to eliminate gaps and emphasize shape.

Unfortunately, we can’t walk around with binder clips on the backs of our clothing; that’s why tailoring is so important. Every woman is shaped differently; waists are lower or higher; hips are bigger or smaller, and busts come in all shapes and sizes. To get the perfect fit, buy clothes that fit the largest part of your body, and then have the rest tailored to fit. For instance, if you have wide hips and a narrow waist, most pants and skirts that fit your hips will gap at the waist. Solve this by having the waist taken in with darts, creating a shapely silhouette. If a shirt is too boxy, have the side seams taken in, and add darts to fit your exact contours.

Walk down any street in Paris, and you will likely see at least one tailor. It can be harder to find good alterations in the United States, but when you shop at Nitsa’s, your perfect fit is right inside the store. Our seamstresses have a combined 180 years of experience and an average of 30 years apiece. Let us help you find your perfect fit today!

Introducing Lyssé and Plenty by Tracy Reese

Attention, all FashioNitsas! Nitsa’s is pleased to announce two of our exciting new fall additions: Lyssé and Plenty by Tracy Reese.

Lyssé

Lyssé, the brainchild of founder Beth Gold Cohen, began with the search for the perfect leggings. Working from the inside out, Lyssé designers created fabrics that are both flexible and flattering—as limitless as the women who wear them. Lyssé uses their patent-pending fabrics, flat-locked seaming, and bias cuts to create beautiful clothes that can go comfortably from day to evening. Come check Nitsa’s new Lyssé line and find out why their motto is “Because when your clothes embrace you with the same passion as you embrace life, there’s nothing you can’t do.”

Plenty by Tracy Reese, launched in 1998, represents the designer’s fun, bohemian side. Inspired by the colors of India and elsewhere, Plenty features bright colors, joyful prints, and flirty styles. Celebrities and industry insiders flock to Reese’s signature detailing, which mixes femininity, nostalgia, and a rock-and-roll sensibility. Visit Nitsa’s to see for yourself why Plenty provides “versatile everyday essentials with effortlessly sexy styling.”

Back-To-School Fashion is for Grown-ups Too

Many FashioNitsas have happy memories of back-to-school clothes shopping: the plaid skirts, the wool sweaters, the durable shoes that would last the year. School’s out permanently for most of us, but that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the fun of back-to-school shopping! Here are some trends that will have you looking forward to back to school fashion isn't just for the kids!Labor Day:

Idea #1: Plaid

Plaid is a classic fall pattern, appearing on skirts, pants, shirts, coats, and accessories. While the classic plaid schoolgirl skirt features pleats, you can add sophistication by choosing a slimming pencil skirt instead. Or add some whimsy with a plaid rain hat or umbrella for the North Carolina autumn rains that are sure to come.

Idea #2: Backpacks

They are not just for kids anymore; just last month, Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes were both seen sporting the traditional nylon carryall that so many students carry. Glam up your backpack with updated designs and style, and enjoy the comfort and ergonomic correctness of carrying heavy items on your back, instead of hanging off your shoulder.

Idea #3: Functional flats

Thank heavens that most schoolgirls don’t wear the four-inch stilettos that the fashionistas on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars wear, and you don’t have to either. Look for loafer-style shoes, but skip the pennies to avoid the mutton-dressed-as-lamb syndrome.

Idea #4: Ribbed knits

As discussed previously, ribbed knits were all over the runway for this fall’s on-trend look. Find it at Nitsa’s and revel in the warmth and comfort!

Idea #5: Find your clique

High school is notorious for its cliques, and while FashioNitsas know better than to exclude others, they can still dress like their preferred tribe. Were you a punk, jock, or prepster? This season’s trends cover the gamut, so come into Nitsa’s to showcase your own personal style!

How to Pull Off an All-White Outfit and Look Fabulous!

It may be one of the hardest looks to pull off: the all-white outfit. Unless you’re a doctor or how to wear an all white outfit and look awesomeresearcher wearing a long white lab jacket, all-white outfits can very easily become FashioNitsa “don’ts.” However, if you follow these tips, you can make the all-white outfit work for you.

  1. Make sure your whites match. This may sound silly; white is white, right? Wrong. Just check out the white paint section at your local hardware store if you think that all whites are the same. White clothes come in a variety of shades (pure white, ivory, cream, winter white, etc.), and your own white clothes may change over time to be slightly different shades from what they once were. If your white shirt is slightly pink or slightly yellow, it doesn’t matter if you wear it with jeans or another color. But if you wear it with other whites that it doesn’t match, it’s distracting.
  2. But feel free to mix up the textures. Try denim on the bottom and chiffon on the top, or a silk skirt with a chunky knit sweater. Playing with texture helps keep an all-white outfit from being too flat.
  3. Pay attention to shape and balance. If you wear something long and flowing on the bottom, pair it with something slim-fitting on top, or vice versa. Too much loose and floaty clothing can look like a set of sheets hung out to dry, while too much tight clothing is rarely appropriate.
  4. Add layers. Another way to add depth to a monochromatic outfit is to complement the different textures with different lengths and layers. Try a long tank top with a short sweater.
  5. Add some color. Wearing all white doesn’t mean that all other colors are forbidden. Use shoes and accessories to provide a surprising pop of color. Adding a bright color like red or yellow provides drama, while adding a neutral like gray or brown provides sophistication.
  6. Don’t forget the bronzer. Since no one wants the skin damage that comes from being in the sun, invest in a high-quality bronzer or fake tan spray. An all-white outfit can make pale skin look washed out.
  7. Have confidence! Like any bold look, the outfit only looks as good as you feel.
