Game Day Style

In the South, game day is more celebrated than any other event, and dressing up for tailgate is a tradition. Tailgating in the South is very different than anywhere else in the country—nowhere else will you find women sporting their Sunday best and men in button-down shirts and bowties.

College football season is well underway, and whether you’re a collegiate rooting for your school or an alum headed back to your alma mater, here are a few game day style ideas to show your school spirit while still staying chic at the event:

Keep the forecast in mind. In the South, summer can extend far into the fall, so it’s best to pick lightweight fabrics for your game day outfit and rely on layers if the weather gets chillier. Think lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and scarves. You can choose these in team colors to show your team spirit.

Dress it up. Many women at Southern colleges treat football games and tailgating like a fashion show and enjoy dressing up for the occasion. One idea is to wear a pretty A-line dress in one of your team’s colors. Accessorize with a cardigan and belt or a statement necklace.

Show your spirit. Scarves come in all collegiate colors and are an easy and chic way to work some school spirit into your outfit.

Game Day Style

Kick it up a notch. When the weather gets cooler, a great pair of cowboy boots are a staple for women on game day in the South. One of the most common looks you’ll see at football games at Southern colleges are women in mini-dresses paired with cowboy boots. Plus, they are great for the long walks from the parking lots to the stadium over wet or muddy fields.

Mix it up. You can still make team jerseys look stylish. Pair a fitted football shirt with skinny jeans, a long open cardigan sweater, and cowboy boots.

Comfort is key. No matter whether you choose a dress or jeans, keep comfort in mind. You’ll be in this outfit all day from the tailgate party to the game (and maybe to after parties!), so wear something you will be comfortable in. Football games aren’t the time to test out your new stilettos!

Go team!

Cranfill felt called upon to uphold the traditions of Thai silk production when she first visited the country three decades ago. She was inspired by the time and dedication each piece of silk required. With her intuitive sense of style combined with a talent for working with color, Cranfill designed her first line of evening separates for a private clientele in Southern California. In just a few years, Marisa Baratelli became one of the top Thai silk fashion companies globally, expanding with a successful line of custom-order blouses and jackets offered in a full range of colors, prints, and plaids, giving the customer a hand at their own color creative impulse and needs. Within each of the 50 collections, you will find luminescent colors that demand attention, create elegant drama, and define glamour.

Marisa Baratelli’s fall 2014 line features special occasion dresses, gowns, and separates in deep jewel tones, classic black, and vibrant prints. Several pieces feature their new hand-embroidered prism effect that adds a unique beauty and interest to each piece.

Don’t let your special occasion creep up on you; visit one of Nitsa’s Marisa Baratelli fall 2014 trunk shows for the perfect match!

We’re Pinning For You!

And if our guess is right, we bet you’re pinning, too. (Follow us, won’t you?)

While we would be remiss not to post images of the bridal gowns we carry, we also know that our customers want more than a pretty picture. That’s why we include the name and designer of each gown, and where applicable, the trunk show or brick-and-mortar store where you’ll find your dream dress. If trunk shows are what you’re interested in, lucky you: We have a board just for those, too.

But as our Pinterest board shows, we’re more than our gowns. We also pin images of some of the ladies’ apparel and accessories, cocktail dresses, and cosmetics that you’ll find alongside our bridal selection. Our Fashionista board is a collaboration of designers you’ll find in our hip, ready-to-wear store by the same name, and our Words that Inspire board is a collection of stylish affirmations.

The Importance of Alterations

Fashion is 3 parts fit and 1 part style…

Rarely do brides—or bridesmaids, or mothers of the bride, for that matter—find a dress Why alterations are importantthat fits them perfectly without having a skilled seamstress make a few nips and tucks. That’s why alterations are key to making sure you look your best on your big day. Our in-house alterations department knows this well: We have over 40 years of alterations experience (read more about our history here) and are accustomed to working with the finest (and sometimes trickiest) fabrics, like silk and leather. That’s why we also offer alteration services to those who have chosen to shop elsewhere. While we obviously hope that you find your dream dress in our shop, our other goal is make sure you have a dress fit for a queen—or, more appropriately, a dress fit for you.

A Few Fitting Tips:

– Bring your dress early, but not too early. The earlier the fitting the higher the risk the dress won’t fit perfectly on the actual day; the later the fitting the higher the risk it won’t be finished on time. At Nitsa’s, we’ll help you create your ideal alterations timeline so ill-fitting, or ill-timing isn’t an issue.

– Bring accessories. By wearing both your undergarments and shoes at your fitting, you’ll make sure that your dress will be perfectly adjusted. Wearing other accessories—your earrings, your veil, etc.—will help you visualize what you’ll look like that day.

– Bring a friend. If possible bring your maid of honor. The final fitting is a great time for her to learn to bustle before the big day, and just generally to learn how your gown works. If you need an extra pair of eyes earlier on, your mom or a close friend is an idea companion for earlier fittings.

Nitsa’s – Expect the Exceptional

Over 40 years ago in 1964, Nitsa Bambalis opened her first store on downtown Winston-Salem’s Fourth Street. News of Nitsa’s Fourth Street Tailors and Alterations spread quickly

Grand Opening of Stratford

Invitation for our Grand Opening in 1995!

in the community, and it soon became known as the go-to place in Winston-Salem for alterations and custom clothing. While we certainly haven’t outgrown our alteration roots—it’s still an important part of our store today—we knew that everything good must grow.

In 1979, we moved our shop to Stratford Road and tweaked the name to Nitsa’s Apparel and Alterations. After several moves along Stratford, Nitsa’s now resides at Stratford place—10,000 square feet of the finest couture gowns, boutique apparel, and accessories, and cosmetics. Our sister store sits in Charlotte’s Phillips Place and provides the Queen City’s residents with simply the best selection of bridal gowns, social, and cocktail dresses.

Even though Nitsa’s boasts more square footage—and locations—these days, our commitment to quality and fit hasn’t changed. Craftsmanship and honesty, impeccable taste, and integrity are still things we practice every day, and personal service is just that: personal. That’s why a stop at Nitsa’s isn’t just a simple shopping trip; it’s an experience, and an exceptional experience at that. From your initial entry into the store, through your fittings and alterations and even your exit, we make sure that you not only look great, but that you feel great about your purchase, too. And isn’t that what boutique experience is all about?
