Back-to-School Fall Fashion Trends

What’s Trendy this Fall?

Students are already heading back to school, and whether you are in high school or 2014 fall trendscollege, hitting the books is a lot more fun with new fall outfits.

As a grown-up, fashion’s fall season is your symbolic first day. It’s the perfect way to motivate yourself for work after the lazy days of summer come to an end.

As summer winds down, 2014 fall fashion trends are already hitting the stores, and Nitsa’s has a variety of new clothing and accessories to get you back to school—or work—in style.

Here are five hot trends for fall:

  • Denim — Who doesn’t remember getting a new pair of jeans to head back to school? Whether they’re skinny, straight, boot-cut, or boyfriend, a great pair of jeans never goes out of style. And if you think denim on denim is a fashion don’t, this year it’s not—pairing fall’s new washed-denim shirts with jeans is definitely a fashion DO, but the look needs to be very intentional and shouldn’t match. Trends for denim this fall are less crisp than in the past and include more washed-out styles and patchwork denim.
  • 60s mod — Think Twiggy or Mad Men but with a modern take. Sixties mod styles like mini dresses and little shift dresses are hot this fall.
  • Pastels — Usually when you think of pastels, you think of spring, but this year soft, feminine colors can add a pop to your wardrobe in winter pieces such as coats and sweaters.
  • 90s Throwback — Relive the 90s with fall’s urban streetwear looks. Nineties throwback styles this season are not extreme (no parachute pants here!) but include lots of worn-in overalls and denim mixed with athletic-inspired pieces.
  • Shorts — Shorts are the perfect transition from summer to fall, and this season’s trend is the boyfriend short—a slouchier, rolled-up version that can be dressed up with a blouse or cardigan and little booties or dressed down with a t-shirt and flats.

2013 Top-Layer Trends

Fall fashion is all about layering and the 2013 runways were stacked with hot, top-layer trends.

Pullover picture from www.refinery29.com

Here are our favorites for the season.

One part cozy and one part quirky, the graphic pullover is an ode to the 70s, and we are stoked for its comeback. A graphic pullover is not your average sweater. It has flair in the form of funky designs and cool images. Floral designs and sharp geometrics stand out as leading trends, but don’t forget the ever-popular Aztec patterns. Kittens and Christmas trees, however, are best left for holiday parties. Since it’s a retro trend, try your luck at thrift stores to find a vintage gem.

Fall and cardigans go together like peas and carrots. Grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte and head to the football game in an oversized cardigan—another hot 2013 trend. Extra-long and a little bit baggy, the oversized cardigan is the perfect top layer to any casual outfit. Look for one with a fun accent, like different colored pockets or elbow patches. Pair with your favorite jeans and Converse Chucks to complete the cozy chic look.

For the workplace, get down to business in a tuxedo-style blazer. Sleek, sexy and professional, the tuxedo blazer is an autumn accent that is sure to turn heads. Layer over a fitted dress with tall black booties for the office, or throw over top a graphic white tee and distressed jeans for a casual weekend look.

Fall has an on-again, off-again relationship with military-inspired clothing, and this year, it is definitely on! Runways were once again filled with camo prints and army green. Salute this style with camo anything topped off with camel and olive accents. The headliner for this trend is the baggy camo jacket. For a chic twist, wear it with black stilettos and a sock bun.

Celebrate Pantone’s Color of the Year with Amsale!

We’ve been giddy with excitement over the incredible 2013 color of the year, emerald green! Amsale is a popular line at Nitsa’s and we love what they’ve done with it!

Amsale introduced the brand new color Emerald in October 2012, and the following January, Pantone announced that it is their color of the year!

According to Pantone, “Balanced yet sophisticated, Emerald enlivens all colors in the spectrum and will continue to make a statement beyond spring and summer into fall and winter.”

Emerald would pair well with mid-tone brights (Peacock and Cobalt) as well as deeper jewel tones (Amethyst, Ink, Mallard, Pacific, Eggplant, Navy, and French Blue).

To see the full line of colors from Amsale, visit the bridal salon at Nitsa’s in Winston-Salem or Charlotte!

Ladies Who Lead: Jennifer Filipowski

Jennifer Filipowski is another one of those “Yanks” who came to North Carolina and decided to stay because felt she could really make a difference in Winston-Salem to a greater extent than in her hometown of Chicago. (The traffic and weather helped too.)

After 25 years of managing successful marketing events and programs for prestigious companies around the globe, Jennifer decided to shift her focus closer to home and spend more time with her 9 year old daughter “while she still wants me Jennifer Filipowski is a Woman Who Leadsaround.” Her time in the male-dominated corporate world made her passionate about women’s empowerment and self-esteem issues.

“Studies have shown that the height of girls’ ambitions peak at age 8 or 9, and I think that is tragic. I want every girl, especially my daughter, to understand that they have the power to be whatever they want to be,” says Filipowski. “I think a lot of the independence and confidence I have personally stems from the things I learned as a Girl Scout, so having my daughter in Girl Scouts is the one non-negotiable activity in our household.”

After taking over as leader of her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, Jennifer quickly found herself involved to an even larger extent with the local Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont Council overseeing more than 50 troops in the Winston-Salem area. She also joined the Board of Directors last fall.

“I especially love the Girl Scout Cookie program because it gives girls hands-on marketing, communication, sales, budgeting, and math skills. And of course they’re so yummy!” (Girl Scouts happen to be out selling cookies now, BTW.)

But her dedication to women’s issues isn’t solely focused on girls. Jennifer is also on the board of the Professional Women of Winston-Salem, a group that organizes networking events and monthly luncheons with speakers on a wide range of topics of interest to female small business owners and industry leaders. Her role there is as chair of the scholarship program, which awards annual $1,000 scholarships to single working mothers in Forsyth County who are going back to school.

“All of the women we receive applications from are so inspiring,” said Filipowski. “By going back to school they are not only trying to improve their own lives. They understand they are setting an example about the importance of education and perseverance for their children.”

When she isn’t dedicating her time and experience to these local organizations or volunteering at her daughter’s school, you’ll either find her on the golf course, at home cooking or quilting, or on a plane. An avid traveler and amateur photographer, Jennifer has a long bucket list of destinations to explore—Southeast Asia and Antarctica are currently at the top of the list. She’s also learning how to fence!

“And I’d really like to learn how to butcher a cow…know anyone who can teach me?”

Thank you, Jennifer, for being a Lady Who Leads and all that you’re doing to raise our next generation of female leaders!

The Importance of Alterations

Fashion is 3 parts fit and 1 part style…

Rarely do brides—or bridesmaids, or mothers of the bride, for that matter—find a dress Why alterations are importantthat fits them perfectly without having a skilled seamstress make a few nips and tucks. That’s why alterations are key to making sure you look your best on your big day. Our in-house alterations department knows this well: We have over 40 years of alterations experience (read more about our history here) and are accustomed to working with the finest (and sometimes trickiest) fabrics, like silk and leather. That’s why we also offer alteration services to those who have chosen to shop elsewhere. While we obviously hope that you find your dream dress in our shop, our other goal is make sure you have a dress fit for a queen—or, more appropriately, a dress fit for you.

A Few Fitting Tips:

– Bring your dress early, but not too early. The earlier the fitting the higher the risk the dress won’t fit perfectly on the actual day; the later the fitting the higher the risk it won’t be finished on time. At Nitsa’s, we’ll help you create your ideal alterations timeline so ill-fitting, or ill-timing isn’t an issue.

– Bring accessories. By wearing both your undergarments and shoes at your fitting, you’ll make sure that your dress will be perfectly adjusted. Wearing other accessories—your earrings, your veil, etc.—will help you visualize what you’ll look like that day.

– Bring a friend. If possible bring your maid of honor. The final fitting is a great time for her to learn to bustle before the big day, and just generally to learn how your gown works. If you need an extra pair of eyes earlier on, your mom or a close friend is an idea companion for earlier fittings.
