What to Wear for All Your Wedding Festivities

What to Wear, What to Wear!

From your engagement party to bridal showers to your rehearsal dinner, there are many occasions leading up to your big day when the bride needs to dress up. Here are some dress ideas for each of the parties where you will be the guest of honor.

Engagement Party

The engagement party will kick off your wedding festivities, as you and your fiancé officially announce your engagement to friends and family. Usually held as a cocktail party, the ideal outfit for the bride-to-be is a cocktail dress, but nothing too formal or too casual either. It is customary for the bride-to-be to wear cream or white at events leading up to her big day, so a pretty choice would be a fitted, cream, lace minidress with nude sandals or heels, depending on the season. Metallics like bronze or silver are also very up-to-the minute and add just the right amount of sparkle for the guest of honor. If you choose to stick with a classic little black dress, choose one in a semiformal material such as silk or lace, and make a statement with accessories. But go easy on the jewelry as the focus should be on your new engagement ring!

Bridal Shower

Nothing says a bridal shower like pastels! If your bridal showers will be held in spring or summer, a pastel sundress is the perfect look. Since most bridal showers take place during daytime hours, a pretty day dress is the best choice. When searching for a shower dress, look for something with a little feminine flair such as bows or lace. Showers traditionally include only female attendees—making them a great opportunity to channel your girly side.

Bachelorette Party

The bachelorette party is the time for you to go all out and wear something fun and sexy. Dark skinny jeans with a sparkly halter top and jacket is a great choice for a night out with your best girlfriends. Or choose a fitted minidress and heels for a night spent club-hopping.

Rehearsal Dinner

On the evening before your big day, you want to look elegant and beautiful, but you will also want to keep your look low maintenance—your wedding day will be the time to fuss over your appearance! Your choice of dress or outfit will depend on what type of rehearsal dinner you have and where you have it. For more formal country club or hotel ballroom events, you’ll want to choose a dress that is a little fancier. Traditionally, brides wear white or cream for the rehearsal dinner, but you can veer from tradition and pick a dress in a color. For example, you might want a dress in the color of your bridesmaids’ dresses or one of your wedding décor colors. Or black is always classic and elegant. A knee-length dress is a good choice.

More casual rehearsal dinners at a restaurant or at someone’s home call for a less formal look. For instance, wear a dressy sundress for a summer outdoor dinner or a pretty wrap dress for a restaurant affair. If your rehearsal dinner will be very casual such as a backyard cookout, you could go even more casual in a light sundress or capri pants with a flowy top. Stick with flats for outdoor events.

With so many parties and festivities leading up to your wedding day, you may want to go ahead and plan your outfits in advance and do any shopping early, so you won’t be stressed out as the time comes for the big event. The goal is for the bride to have a good time and be showered with attention and not to worry about how she looks!
